Synchronicity

cruise [July 20th, 2009, 7:34 pm]

Whilst wandering to and from my place of emply I have taken to the habit of listening to movie soundtracks - I have about three hundred assorted cinematic themes on shuffle, and they provide quite the stirring experience.

What really stands out, however, are the surprisingly regular occurrences of the music synchronising with external events. These coincidences range from the cool and faintly surprising, like the Bourne theme kicking in as I walk through a London mainline station (yes, I did start checking for snipers), through the somewhat less explicable start of the Matrix theme while in a tube-station while wearing my replica Neo long coat, to the spookily accurate split-second timing of the 2001 theme beginning as my front door swings open.

Every little time it happens (the music swells to a crescendo as I dash onto a train at the last minute and the doors close behind me) it turns the daily commute into an epic action adventure, full of thrills and excitement. It's awesome, and it's all thanks to our brain's wonderful ability to spot patterns and make connections, even where there are none.
